- US Treasury Department demands Financial Times retraction of Federal Reserve oversight story — On Friday, 28 March, the US Treasury Department issued a formal complaint to the Financial Times and its parent company Nikkei Inc., demanding retraction of a 26 March article reporting that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had discussed increasing oversight of the Federal Reserve modeled on the Bank of England system. Treasury officials, via acting assistant secretary Elliott Hulse, denied Bessent made any such statements publicly or privately and accused the FT of publishing "false claims" and a misleading headline. The FT stood by its reporting and included Treasury responses in the article.
