- Andrew Cuomo campaign posts unlabeled AI-generated deepfake videos in NYC mayoral race — Andrew Cuomo's campaign posted AI-generated deepfake videos attacking opponent Zohran Mamdani during the 2025 New York City mayoral election. One video, later deleted, depicted racist and Islamophobic content showing a fictionalized Mamdani eating rice with his fingers, a Black man shoplifting, and another Black man appearing to endorse sex trafficking. The campaign claimed the ad was sent out by accident. New York state law requires AI-generated campaign ads to be labeled; this ad was not. The incident exemplifies emerging use of generative AI in electoral campaigns.
