- Hundreds protested DeSantis migrant detention facility in Everglades — Hundreds of protesters lined Highway 41 through the Everglades to oppose construction of Ron DeSantis's migrant detention facility, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz." Protesters waved signs calling for protection of the preserve, home to Native tribes and endangered species. The state fast-tracked the project under emergency executive powers, allowing it to sidestep purchasing laws and local objections from Miami-Dade County. The facility will use temporary structures like tents and trailers to house detained immigrants, with the state estimating 5,000 detention beds operational by early July.
