- Texas Republicans unveil aggressive congressional redistricting map targeting five Democratic seats — Texas Republicans, at the urging of Donald Trump, unveiled a new congressional map on July 30 that would allow the GOP to gain as many as five additional seats. The map consolidates two Democratic seats in Austin, redraws districts in south Texas and Houston, and eliminates one majority people-of-color seat. Democrats denounced it as illegal voter suppression and racial discrimination. The map was unveiled after public hearings where the proposed districts were not presented, rendering the legally required hearings pro forma. Democrats have pledged legal challenges and may consider leaving the state to deny quorum.
